When you find out that you are going to be a parent you often receive a lot of advice (sometimes solicited, but other times not so much). Advice such as: "Time goes so fast. Make the most of it." or "Don't forget to continue investing in your marriage." One thing I remember reading was, "When your kids fight it’s one of the most devastating things." My kids are still small (so the fights are too), but I have found that I can't stand when they do fight.
Imagine what God feels like when His children fight. When we are bitter, unforgiving, and hurtful towards others. One of the great beauties of the Church is that when Jesus died He didn’t just die for us, but He also died to unite us. To make a new family. There is no dividing wall between who makes more money or who has more accomplishments. Our nationality is irrelevant and our demographics are of no importance. Through our faith in Jesus and His finished work on the cross we are family and completely equal.
We are not the same, but we are of the same family. We do not forfeit our identity or our personhood, but our identity is changed as we are adopted into the family of God. We are not just any ordinary family, but a family with a purpose. We are a family with a mission. His mission. To seek and save that which is lost.
Do you believe every Christian is a family member of yours? How would things change if you did?
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household. - Ephesians 2:19
Lord, help me to see my fellow Christ-followers as you see them. To treat them as family, to live in with them harmony, and to fulfill your mission along side them.
